Chapter 5: Through the Moon Pass Gorge
Chapter 5:
Through the Moon Pass Gorge
~~~
The party set out from Jalanthar early the next morning, some of them slightly hungover (maybe a couple more than that) from the previous night's carousing at the Crowing Cockatrice.
The road to Sundabar winded through the forested foothills of the Nether Mountains on its way through the Moon Pass Gorge, and the forest grew denser with each mile they traveled.
Around highsun, they found themselves crossing a small wooden bridge over a creek, undoubtedly one of the tributaries flowing into the River Rauvin, its cold, clear water glistening where the light of the sun penetrated the canopy above them.
- Spot DC 14:
- You spot blood in the water of the creek beneath the bridge.
Amra Braegen: "Shouldn't take us long to get to Whisperwind Keep from here. It's been a while since I traveled this way, but I remember this bridge..." The blue- and black-clad moon elf inquired as they passed over the whistling creek. She was leaning on her exquisitely carved wooden walking staff with one hand, the other hand placed on the wooden railing of the bridge, peering off into the distance.
"I would say a couple of bells at most. We should be there before the day reaches tharsun at least... Wouldn't you agree Rhenwald?"
Re: Chapter 5: Through the Moon Pass Gorge
"Bah, you elves and yer fancy tongue," Cyrus responds jokingly, his breath a puff of vapor in the chilly air. "Can't go two steps without sounding pompous. 'Tharsun'... Yeah, if we keep up the pace, we'll reach the keep long before sundown. Going pretty good, considering," he looks back at the rest of the party and bites his lip.
In the forest, the hunter seems to be at home, calm and collected, finding his way like fish in the water with barely any noise. Crossing the bridge, he looks over the dilapidated railing and stops for a moment. He then raises a clenched fist - a sign for the rest to stop. Followed by his dog, the ranger quickly crosses the rest of the bridge and gets down to the creek, his longbow at the ready.
"Blood in the water," he says, looking up to Amra. "Gotta be on our toes, it couldn't have flown from afar". He stares into the stream for a couple of moments to see if it brought a body with it.
Re: Chapter 5: Through the Moon Pass Gorge
Below the bridge Rhenwald finds the mangled corpse of an orc scout, stuck between a rock in the water and the shore of the creek.
- Listen DC 14:
- You hear a muffled growl too close for comfort.
Re: Chapter 5: Through the Moon Pass Gorge
"Fuck me," Cyrus mutters as he approaches the orc's corpse in shallow water. "There he is. Something chopped him up pretty good."
All of a sudden, Lissie whines nervously and turns in a different direction. With a low growl, she stands there, ears pinned, the whole body ready to dart off.
"What, something in there, girl?" the ranger responds, turning in the same direction and listening carefully. Arrow on the string, he moves slowly towards the bridge with a series of sidesteps, not turning away from the potential danger. "Something's in the trees, be alert."
Re: Chapter 5: Through the Moon Pass Gorge
Amra Braegen: "A beast! Hurry!"
Amra drops her staff (free action), casts shield (standard action) and moves swiftly away from the bridge and to the edge of the slope above the beast (move action), drawing the rather large chakram from her side as she does so. She now has the red tiger in sight and is close enough to throw her chakram at it.
Re: Chapter 5: Through the Moon Pass Gorge
Spotting the beast, Avis instinctively casts Mage Armor, sharing it with Ikkri. "Get ready with those badgers of yours," she says to Nerea. "I think the beast wants a snack." She darts to the railing on the side closest to the tiger.
Re: Chapter 5: Through the Moon Pass Gorge
Rhenwald draws the string of his longbow at once, releasing the arrow, but it simply glances off the thick skin of the beast.
"Heel, Lissie!" he shouts, quickly moving towards the end of the bridge, so that he could support Amra if the tiger lunges at her. From his quiver he quickly draws two arrows with broad heads, made for hunting big game, and prepares to send them into the prey.
Re: Chapter 5: Through the Moon Pass Gorge
There's a splatter of blood across the ground as the red tiger rakes its claws across Rhenwald's chest. Around her, the others have already leapt into the fray and here she is, still fumbling with her bow. She's nervous. Something about the snarling beast has unsettled her, set a trembling in her hands that's not easy to shake off. Unthinkingly, she nocks an arrow, letting loose--only for it to streak past the beast's head, barely scraping an ear.
"Oh, sark all--!" she hisses, holding her ground. "Get away from him!"
(Red tiger takes a whopping 2 points of damage).
Re: Chapter 5: Through the Moon Pass Gorge
As Kardalis realizes that this creature is attacking the members of the group, he briefly closes his eyes and reaches into the air above him, as if grabbing something. His hand seems to shimmer for a moment and as he flings his hand forward toward the creature, an ever growing wad of translucent goo hurtles through the air.
Before he sees the result of the throw he turns to the other side of the bridge and deftly hops the railing landing on the bank, near an orc corpse, and stalks toward the engaged cat making sure to keep enough space between himself and it, hoping that his first action proved efficacious.
(Red Tiger is entangled)
Watching the little stream while Cyrus checks under the bridge, Imarra only notices the beast when the fight has already started. Weighed down by her backpack she thinks at first to loose it, but decides that shooting the thing might be more helpful. Pulling back the lever of her crossbow as she draws it from her side, the wizard loads it and loosens the bolt quickly at the tiger. But aiming too hurriedly she sends the bolt too high, past it into a tree.
Avis watches arrow and bolt whizz and scrape past the tiger uselessly. "For fuck's sake," she curses. She had been reaching for her crossbow, but scraps the idea. They needed to hurt this beast, and soon. She instead traces patterns with a hand and utters a few arcane words, casting Magic Missile. Both missiles shoot into the red tiger's hide, dealing 7 points of force damage. She then runs towards the other end of the bridge, 30 feet.
Re: Chapter 5: Through the Moon Pass Gorge
As the beast lunges at Rhenwald, he braces for it and rolls on the ground, grunting. He manages to get the tiger off of him, but not before it strikes the ranger with its mighty paw. The buff coat protects him from the deadly talons, but the sheer force of the strike blows all the air from Rhenwald's lungs, sending him to the ground with immense pain in the ribs. He rolls again, not letting go of the weapon, and yells:
"Bite, Lissie! Attack!" Walking back, the hunter winces from the pain. Holding one arrow between his fingers, he places the second one on the string and fires at random, barely scratching the tiger's hide, then immediately looses the second arrow. It hits the beast in the neck. With a growl, the dog throws itself onto the tiger, standing between it and Cyrus, but ultimately fails to damage him.
(Red tiger takes 9 damage)
Nerea takes a breath. Again, the tiger's roar unsettles her. She knows as she lets loose that the shot will miss. Please, she thinks, with great frustration, please guide my hand.
With a mulish glare, she staunchly remains in place.
Noticing the advantage he has from flanking the creature, Kardalis briefly holds deep red crystal blade out in front of him, channeling power into it. He strikes forward stabbing deep into the flesh of the monster and the blade seems to cause even more pain than it normally would.
The vicious retaliation her allies are giving the beast gives Imarra the neccessary time load anew and aim better. "Come on, hit.". She takes a step closer and loosens the mechanism to send a bolt deep into the side of the red-furred tiger (dealing 8 Damage).
Re: Chapter 5: Through the Moon Pass Gorge
Amra throws her chakram at the tiger and the magical metal disc goes flying through the air, while the moon elf swiftly repositions herself behind Rhenwald the ranger, so she can touch him with a healing spell on her next turn. The chakram slashes the tiger's back for 4 damage before it returns to Amra's hand.
Re: Chapter 5: Through the Moon Pass Gorge
Scooting about halfway down the bridge towards Nerea, Avis readies her crossbow and props it on the railing, using it to steady her shot. She fires, and the bolt sinks into the tiger's shoulder, dealing 7 piercing damage.
Re: Chapter 5: Through the Moon Pass Gorge
As his companions shower the beast with arrows, Rhenwald draws the string again. The arrow opens a grievous gash in the tiger's neck, cutting the artery, just as the beast is about to hit Lissie again. It stops almost dead in its tracks, bleeding out, but still ready to fight. Without a single word, Cyrus makes another shot: a bodkin arrowhead pierces the tiger's skull, killing the beast. It collapses onto the ground like a sack of stones.
"Heel, Lissie!" Rhenwald shouts, immediately turning outwards to make sure there is no incoming threat.
(Red tiger takes 19 damage and dies.)
Re: Chapter 5: Through the Moon Pass Gorge
Amra Braegen: "Good work everyone. Taking down a red tiger is no small accomplishment. Especially not during the winter, where such beasts tend to be extra ferocious..."
Amra wipes the beast blood off her chakram with a small cloth from her pocket and fastens it to the side of her belt again, before she chants some sacred words and touches Rhenwald's wounds with a radiant healing hand, healing him for 8 points of damage.
Combat ends. Each adventurer gains 200 xp.
Re: Chapter 5: Through the Moon Pass Gorge
"Everybody alright?" Cyrus calls out, still eyeing the trees, and winces again. "Gah, my fucking ribs. Amra, could you tend to my hound? I think she needs help."
He kneels down, patting Lissie on the head, as the rush of combat slowly subsides. He keeps close in order to calm her down. "You did good, girl. Hang in there." He fidgets as the cleric lays hands on his side and simply nods in acknowledgement.
